Do a historic walk through Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch is the second oldest town in South Africa (after Cape Town) and is packed with history and beautiful examples of Cape Dutch architecture as well as examples of the British influence in the Cape.  Visit the tourist information bureau and get a map of the town’s many historic sites.

Go wine tasting along the wine route

The Stellenbosch wine route is the oldest and most popular wine route in South Africa.  It is the South African wine region with the most awarded wines per capita.  Even if you do not drink wine, you should at least smell some of these gorgeous wines of this region, or just absorb the sheer beauty of the vineyards set amidst a backdrop of mountains

Dine in South Africa’s best restaurants

The Eat Out Top 10 list for restaurants in South Africa, had 3 restaurants from Stellenbosch, and 7 restaurants (in total) out of the top 10 from were from the Cape Winelands.  If you want to eat out in South Africa, you have come to the right place!

Walk the avenues of the university

Stellenbosch is well known for its oak lined avenues and Victoria street especially, offers beautiful scenes of the campus of the university of Stellenbosch, which even has its own “Red plain”.  Why not see if you can find it...

Walk across the rugby fields of the biggest rugby club in the world

Stellenbosch Rugby Club is regarded as the biggest rugby club in the world – the home and breeding ground of many of the world famous Springboks that have represented their country in rugby.  Within a short walking distance, you can have access to these wonderful sporting grounds and train in the gymnasium

Kiss someone special in the “Laan” (“lane” in Afrikaans)

To be a “Matie” (Stellenbosch student), you need to do 3 things: an acorn should fall on your head from an oak tree; you need to fail one test and you need to kiss someone special in the “Laan” next to the Eerste Rivier.  Come on! Feel what it is like to be a “Matie”.

Look for the oldest oak tree in Stellenbosch

Visit the Dutch Reformed Church (“Moederkerk”) at the top of Church street and take a look inside – it is beautiful and there are normally members of the congregation there to assist you if you have any questions.  If you walk down Church Street, away from the church, look for the oldest oak tree in Stellenbosch and if you find it, reward yourself with a good cup of coffee at one of the fantastic coffee/ restaurants in the village.

Drive around the Cape Peninsula for the day

One of the amazing aspects of Stellenbosch, is its central location.  Within 30-60 minutes drive, you are within reach of:

  • The beach: The Strand, Bikini Beach, Camps bay, Muizenberg, St. James beach and many more
  • Cape Town International Airport

Do business in the “silicone valley” of the Cape Winelands

Techno Park in Stellenbosch, is considered to be the “silicone valley” of the Cape Winelands.  If you are a business traveler, Batavia is a great base to operate from, being close to the town centre with easy access to the industrial areas of the town.
